Are You Making Social Media More Complicated Than it Needs to Be? Some Top Back-to-Basics Tips

Someone asked a question on a message board the other day, and it started me thinking again about something I’ve been noticing more and more lately.  The question was basically “Have any of you landed any business from your social media connections?”

It’s a perfectly valid question, to be sure—and I decided to take a moment to reply to it.  My answer was a resounding yes, but as I clarified, not in a “Hey, let me hire you right off of Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn etcetera” kind of way some people might be looking for.

In fact, it doesn’t usually happen that way, folks.

This idea that social media is somehow supposed to function as a direct sales channel goes hand in hand with what I have been seeing more of lately—people seeming to want to make social media a lot more complicated than it needs to be.

In the amount of time someone has gone back and forth debating how much time it’s going to take out of their schedule, worrying about what to say and stressing over whether “social media really works,” they could have already set up a profile, started connecting and be well on their way to seeing that yes—it really and truly does work.

Here’s how social media has produced results for me.  By using it for both a mix of business and regular old conversation, I have built:

1. Visibility for myself and my services and products
2. Know, like and trust for my personal brand
3. Connections with movers and shakers in my niche
4. Subscribers to my blog and email list

These are the things that lead to business, clients, customers and sales. Remember offline networking? It works the same way there as well. Somehow add the words “social media” into the picture and we are thrown into a tizzy of over-thinking and begin to forget this.

The main keys as I see them?

1. Being consistent (Popping in once every few weeks isn’t going to help you out much.)
2. Sharing personality AS WELL AS business info (Don’t be afraid to do this!)
3. Encouraging continued connection OUTSIDE of social media sites (Blog, newsletter, free teleseminars, etc.)

I tweeted about this tendency to over-complicate the other day and mused that it essentially came down to “connect, engage, repeat.” Someone replied that this was “simple, yet brilliant” but I can’t take the credit there. :)  It really is as uncomplicated as that.

Now, all you have to do is jump in—and I promise, the water’s fine!

I would love to hear your thoughts…

My Story; Or How Social Media Kinda Saved My Life

Whenever I do a teleseminar I always give a little bit of background on who I am and why the participants should listen to me.  After all, there are lots of other people who have things to say about using social media and online marketing for business.

Some of you in my community might already know my story, but if not, I wanted to share a little bit about it here on the blog.

Who the Heck am I?

Not so long ago, I was unhappily working in a job at a company that wasn’t doing so well financially and I was feeling really restless and unfulfilled and knew I wanted to have my own business. But, having always had a job, I was unsure how to make the leap and anxious about losing the “security” of a paycheck.

Being someone who always knew that it’s better to learn from people who are where you want to be (instead of fumbling around trying to figure it all out yourself), I began seeking out mentors. That search led me to several people who each taught me some valuable things about personal development, business success and marketing.

The Oh, $%*@ Moment

However, it wasn’t until one day when I decided to make a HUGE (and frankly, very scary) financial leap of faith to hire a mentor and coach (who herself was making well into the 6 figures) who would completely change my life.  In fact, I joke that the universe must have seen I was ready to really play big when I made that decision to hire her—because 3 weeks later I was promptly laid off from my job!

When that happened I was filled with a mix of emotions—fear about what I was going to do, of having had made that big financial commitment and then suddenly being without a job; but then it turned into a kind of nervous excitement because I knew with my coach’s guidance and my own determination there was no turning back and this was my time. I was determined (and had no choice really) to learn as much as I could about building a successful and sustainable business online.

You might wonder why online?  Well, I had just recently gotten married and I was dead set on finding a way to make a really good income without the commute, the lack of control and the lack of true financial opportunity associated with most jobs—and to do it BEFORE we started a family.  Because I knew that when we DID decide to have children, I wanted to be home with them, unlike my own working parents who were never able to be home with me growing up. My parents—like many people’s parents—worked really hard to provide for us but the sacrifice was that they had to be gone all the time.

So, there I was with no job having JUST spent a LOT of money to hire this person to guide me in my business.

The bottom line was, I HAD to make this work.

As I studied under my coach privately for over a year (and continue to), I soaked up all her experience and knowledge like a sponge.  Not only that, but I began implementing like crazy. Although the financial investment was considerable, the shortcuts, accountability and support I was getting was priceless.

For the first time in my life, I knew I was going to achieve my long-held dream of having my own business.

My Social Media “Salvation”

Around the same time, this thing called social media was absolutely blowing up and I began to feel very drawn to it.  I discovered I had a real knack for helping others simplify and implement social media as a marketing strategy.

Combining it with the online marketing and other business skills I was learning through my coach, I began growing my business by leaps and bounds.  People were sitting up and taking notice of this success and were constantly asking me what it was that I was doing.  Because I knew I could map out exactly what I was doing and help others achieve the same results I had—most likely in much less time—I decided to create a real-world, sort-of blueprint for consistently bringing in new clients and customers using the Internet.

See, I was learning from someone who had figured out that it is not about you working harder, but working smarter, and that really rubbed off on me and stayed with me.

And I want to tell you that if you are trying to do this too, that it doesn’t have to be so hard.

So, it took me awhile to flesh out (and write out) the system that I use and follow every day that consistently brings me more customers, clients and income month after month. But now that I have, I regularly share with you (through this blog, my newsletter and my products and programs) the steps that laid the foundation for my business—and made it so I don’t have to struggle—to get clients, to make money, and just to enjoy life.  Because money is great, but it’s also about the lifestyle, right?  Because it’s hard to truly enjoy money when you are always working like a dog.

Starting from Nothing

So, the point of sharing all of that is to show you that I really went from literally NOTHING—no business, no list, no clients, no name recognition, no money—to the enjoyable and profitable business I have today. And it’s important to me for you to realize that this is real-world, practical information and teachings—not some pie in the sky theory or get-rich-quick scheme.  And they are steps YOU can easily and successfully follow too.

I’m happy to announce that I will be again sharing the exact steps I used and STILL use in my business on my next free teleseminar.  Believe me, I understand how frustrating it is to have a bunch of moving parts that you just can’t figure out how to put together. But I’ve spent several years learning from extremely successful mentors and teachers who have demystified the world of online marketing for me—and I can’t to share what I’ve learned with YOU.

You can sign up here for the call and I really hope to have you on the line. :-)

The Missing Link—Or, Why Social Media Isn’t Working For You

I hear a lot of things about social media in doing what I do. There has been a major theme lately popping up with people who say that social media is not working for them.  They’re frustrated and ready to throw in the towel on it, convinced it just doesn’t translate into dollars in their business. I patiently listen to their frustrations, and upon digging deeper, I often find a major flaw in their marketing process.

They’re not getting them on the list.

What does this mean?

Well, they are having interactions and conversations, maybe rubbing shoulders with key people in their industry, finding out lots of great information about what their market wants and needs, maybe even getting these people to click through and visit their website or blog.  All good stuff, right?

It is, except it’s only part of the equation. As much as “relationship-building” is touted as the one of the most important benefits business owners can get from using social media, it can only take one so far—at least, that particular form of relationship-building.

In the Internet marketing world, the mantra has long been “the money is in the list,” meaning your list of prospective customer and client names and email addresses.  It is actually more accurate to say that the money is in the value you provide to your list and in the relationship you build with them. (Otherwise we could all go out and buy ourselves a list of a million names, right?)

But wait, aren’t my 42 zillion Facebook friends and Twitter followers my “list?”  Don’t they count?  Those are fantastic contacts to have, but you don’t own these lists!  Though highly unlikely, Facebook or Twitter could shut down tomorrow.  Your own list of prospects and customers is still one of your greatest assets as a business owner.

Social media should compliment your list building, not replace it. That is where I often see people getting stuck and complaining that the time they are spending on social media isn’t paying off.  What needs to shift is the way they look at social media’s function in their overall marketing. It’s an excellent place to begin establishing relationships, they just need to take it a step further and give people a way to more permanently become a part of their community.

So start building that list of targeted prospects who have essentially “raised their hand” to hear more about your business and what you have to offer. Once they’ve joined your list, your job is to continually provide them with quality content, valuable tips and helpful information so that when they are ready to buy from you, that all-important trust and familiarity has already been established.

Treat ‘em well and it will pay off in spades. :)

Clarifying Your Social Media Strategy with the POST Method

It sounds obvious, but before you implement a new marketing strategy in your business, you need to know what your objectives are first—i.e., what is it that you are trying to accomplish?  Social media is no different.  It’s not enough to want to add it to your marketing mix just because “everyone else is doing it.”

Fortunately, Forrester Research came up with a handy little acronym, which my colleague Amy Miyamoto and I also recently included in our Social Media Made Simple webinar series. It’s called the POST Method*, and it’s a really great way to frame your social media strategy. Here’s how it breaks down:

P: Who are the PEOPLE you would most like to attract via your social media presence on sites such as Facebook and Twitter? For example–mentors, raving fans, potential clients, colleagues, strategic alliance partners, local connections? Or a combination of these?

O: What are your primary OBJECTIVES for your Social Media presence? For example, is it to get found by those who are looking for your products or services, finding and interacting with current and potential clients and customers, building relationships with potential strategic alliance and referral partners, building a community around your business, creating awareness of your content and offerings, learning from mentors?

S: What Social Media STRATEGIES do you plan to implement? Will you have a Twitter profile, a LinkedIn profile, a Facebook Fan Page, start a blog, join a Facebook Group? Which ones have priority over others?

T: What TECHNOLOGIES will you use? For example—Hootsuite, YouTube, Ping.fm, Twitpic, Twellow, Bit.ly for link shortening? (The ones you determine to be of highest priority to you will influence the kinds of actions you take on the social media sites you have a presence on.)

Finally, for bonus points, you could also include “M” as in “how will you MEASURE your social media results?” Understandably, businesspeople still want to know the ROI of their activities—and although this is not as cut and dry to measure in social media, there are still certain metrics that you can look to: your number of newsletter or blog subscribers, your website traffic, number of followers and fans, how many purchases made, the amount of comments on your blog, etc.

The POST method is a good basic structure for starting to define your social media objectives, plan, and priorities. By identifying all the relevant parts of the structure you are creating a clearer purpose and vision—as well as implementing goals, strategies, and tools that will best enable you to reach the ideal people you are looking to connect with via social media.

Social Media Made Simple Webinar Series Starts Mon. 11/30!

Picture 1My colleague and good friend Amy Miyamoto and I invite you to join us for Social Media Made Simple, a 4-part teleseries taking place Monday 11/30, Wednesday 12/2, Monday 12/7, Wednesday 12/9 and a special bonus Q&A call Monday 12/14, 2009. All calls will 60-75 minutes in length and will begin at 10am PST/1pm EST.

This class is for relatively new social media users who want to finally get over their fears or hesitation around social media—and enjoy one of the easiest ways to build their business, boost their revenues and become the go-to expert in their industry.

Amy and I should know: since we’ve added social media to our marketing strategies we have both enjoyed more clients, more visibility and credibility as experts in our fields, and more lucrative partnerships with fellow business colleagues.  In fact, Amy and I met through Twitter and this course is the result of that connection.  The fact that she’s in California and I’m in New Jersey couldn’t even stop us! :-)

And surprise—social media does not have to be difficult or complicated (or take up all of your precious time!) Once you get over the learning curve, anyone with a message and a passion can create a powerful presence on Twitter and Facebook—one that will produce phenomenal results for you and your business.

Every person who chooses to invest in themselves and their business as a participant in Social Media Made Simple will also get:

  • Digital downloads and CDs of all 4 webinars
  • Digital and hardcopy participant workbook
  • Checklist of all the tools, websites, applications covered by Christine and Amy during the webinar series
  • The confidence and know-how to get business done on Facebook and Twitter!

In order to keep you on track even after the calls are over, we are also including a couple of great bonuses: a Q&A Bonus Call to get all of your specific questions answered; and our own 30-Day Social Media Action Plan which provides ongoing guidance from Amy and I to keep you focused on success even after the class is over—delivered right to your inbox.
